Loose Fill Done Right

Blown-in cellulose and fiberglass is how most Texarkana attics get to a solid R-value without the price of foam. A machine blows loose material through a hose into an even layer across the attic floor, filling around joists, wires and fixtures. Over a sealed ceiling, it delivers a lot of performance for the money.

Cellulose or fiberglass

Cellulose is recycled paper treated for fire resistance; it is dense, fills small gaps well and slows air movement through the layer. Loose-fill fiberglass is lighter, does not absorb much water and settles very little. Fixr lists blown fiberglass at $1.65 to $2.60 per square foot and cellulose at $1.75 to $3.80. In a humid area with occasional roof leaks, both work over a sealed ceiling; we suggest one for your attic.

How deep

Texas code lists R-38 for new ceilings in Zone 3; Arkansas code lists R-30. ENERGY STAR suggests R-49 for an existing attic with no insulation. We set depth markers so you can confirm the installed depth.

Seal first

Loose fill slows heat but not air. Humid attic air moving through ceiling gaps carries heat and moisture right through new insulation. Every blown-in job we quote starts with sealing.

Walls

Older homes with empty wall cavities can have cellulose or fiberglass dense-packed through small holes, which are then patched. We test a few cavities and check for old wiring first.

Top up or remove

If existing insulation is dry and reasonably even, new loose fill goes over it. If it is wet, moldy or contaminated, removal comes first.

SWEPCO

If SWEPCO is your utility, its weatherization page lists insulation among the measures it helps pay for through approved contractors. Check the current program before your job.
