A Railroad Town Near the Red River
Spray Foam Insulation in Fouke covers a small Miller County city about 15 miles southeast of Texarkana, Arkansas. A Seventh Day Baptist colony chose the site along the Texarkana, Shreveport and Natchez Railroad in 1890, the town is named for James H. Fouke, who donated land for a school in 1902, and it was incorporated in 1911. The Red River is less than 10 miles to the east and south.
History and work
Farming, timber, a 1920s oil boom and World War II jobs at the Lone Star Army Ammunition Plant and Red River Army Depot shaped the town. By 2011, the Fouke School District was the largest employer.
Housing
Fouke had 808 residents and 281 households in 2020; the 2000 census counted 336 housing units. Homes include older houses near the center of town and newer homes on larger lots.
River-bottom humidity
Near the Red River bottoms, humidity runs high. Crawl spaces stay damp, and wood framing can stay wet. Closed-cell foam under floors or a sealed crawl space keeps moisture out of the house.
Boggy Creek
Fouke is known for The Legend of Boggy Creek and the Fouke Monster, and holds a Boggy Creek Festival. None of that affects insulation, but the creek bottoms around town are a reminder of how wet the ground can get.
Arkansas code
Miller County is Climate Zone 3A. Arkansas's 2009-based code lists R-30 ceilings and R-13 walls in Zone 3.
Log cabin post office
Fouke's U.S. Post Office is built in a log cabin design, and the historic Scoggins House serves as a community event center and library. Older buildings and homes in town often have wood framing and crawl spaces. Sealing and insulating the floor and the attic makes them easier to keep comfortable.
I-49 and U.S. 71
U.S. 71 runs through the city and I-49 passes just west. Homes near either road pick up traffic noise that open-cell foam helps dampen.
