A Rail Junction Turned Suburb
Spray Foam Insulation in Nash covers a fast-growing suburb on the western edge of Texarkana. Nash grew from 2,960 residents in 2010 to 3,814 in 2020, and the census counted 1,691 housing units with only 6.7 percent vacant. I-30 Exit 218 forms its northern boundary, and U.S. 82 and FM 989 run through town.
Railroad origins
Nash started as a junction on the Texas and Pacific Railway. It was renamed Park in 1884 after its first postmaster and took the name Nash in 1906, honoring a T&P division superintendent. The first school opened in 1885, and a cyclone in 1894 destroyed a third of the town. It incorporated in the 1950s.
Old and new housing
With that history, Nash has older homes alongside newer subdivisions. Older homes often have crawl spaces with failing insulation and thin attics. Newer homes are tighter but still have gaps at hatches, lights and garage ceilings. With 94.8 percent of residents in urban areas, most homes are on standard suburban lots.
Depot jobs
In 1980, many Nash residents worked in Texarkana or at the Red River Army Depot and the Lone Star Army Ammunition Plant a few miles west. Homes built for those workers in the postwar decades are now among the older homes in town.
Climate
Nash's climate data list a July average high of 93F, a January average low of 31F, a record of 108F and a record low of -6F in 1989, with about 51.24 inches of precipitation a year. November is the wettest month.
Code
Bowie County is Climate Zone 3A. Texas uses the 2015 IRC energy chapter: R-38 ceilings and R-19 floors in Zone 3.
Interstate and highway homes
Homes near I-30, U.S. 82 and FM 989 pick up road noise. Open-cell foam in attic and wall cavities dampens sound along with heat, which helps bedrooms on the road side.
Early cemeteries and old homes
Two early cemeteries, the Handley or Blocker Cemetery from 1876 and the Nash Cemetery, date from the town's railroad years. A handful of older homes survive from the decades after, often with crawl spaces and little insulation. For those, sealing the floor and the attic usually comes before anything else.
