Frequently Asked Questions

Spray Foam Insulation Questions

Is spray foam a good idea in a humid climate like Texarkana?

Closed-cell foam is well suited to damp places like crawl spaces and rim joists because it does not take on water. Open-cell works under roof decks. The key is fixing leaks first and choosing the foam for the space.

Should I insulate my crawl space floor or encapsulate it?

It depends on the ductwork, the ground moisture and your budget. Insulating the floor costs less; sealing the crawl space keeps ducts and pipes in a drier, more stable space. We price both.

What R-value does a Texarkana attic need?

On the Texas side, the 2015 code lists R-38 for new ceilings; on the Arkansas side, the 2009-based code lists R-30. ENERGY STAR suggests R-49 for a bare existing attic in Zone 3.

How much does spray foam insulation cost?

HomeGuide's national figures put it at $1.50 to $5.00 per square foot installed. Crawl spaces run $2,000 to $4,000 and attics $3,000 to $8,000. Your written estimate is the price.

Does SWEPCO help pay for insulation?

SWEPCO's weatherization page lists insulation and caulking and weatherstripping through approved contractors in Arkansas, Louisiana and Texas. Check its current program before your job.

Can you insulate a shop or pole barn?

Yes. Closed-cell foam on the steel cuts heat and stops condensation drip.

Spray Foam Insulation Questions

Which foam for a crawl space?

Closed-cell, because it does not absorb water and slows vapor.

Can spray foam cause moisture problems?

Only when it covers leaks or the wrong foam is used in a damp place. We fix leaks first and match foam to the space.

Does Arkansas require different R-values than Texas?

Yes. Arkansas uses a 2009-based code (R-30 ceilings in Zone 3); Texas uses the 2015 code (R-38).

How long do I stay out after spraying?

HomeGuide says 24 hours or more. We confirm for your product.

Crawl Space Insulation & Encapsulation Questions

Is crawl space encapsulation worth it?

It is most worth it when ducts and pipes run through the crawl space and moisture is a problem. Otherwise, insulating the floor may be enough.

Why are my crawl space batts falling down?

They absorb moisture and get heavy. Closed-cell foam does not have that problem.

Will encapsulation stop musty smells?

It usually helps a lot, along with fixing any water sources.

Do I need a dehumidifier after encapsulation?

Some homes do. We look at your system and the space.

Attic Sealing & Insulation Questions

What R-value does my attic need?

Texas code lists R-38 and Arkansas code R-30 for new ceilings in Zone 3. ENERGY STAR suggests R-49 for a bare existing attic.

Can you add insulation over what is there?

Yes, if it is dry and clean.

Why does my house feel damp?

Humid attic and crawl space air leaking in is a common cause. Sealing helps.

How long does it take?

Most attic jobs take a day.

Pole Barn & Shop Insulation Questions

Will spray foam stop my barn roof from dripping?

Yes. Closed-cell foam keeps humid air off the cold steel.

Do I have to remove the old fiberglass?

Usually, so the foam can bond to the steel.

Can you do several buildings?

Yes, priced separately on one quote.

Does foam help with rain noise?

Yes, noticeably.

Blown-In Cellulose & Fiberglass Questions

Cellulose or fiberglass?

Both work over a sealed ceiling. Cellulose is denser; fiberglass resists moisture and settles less.

Will blown-in settle?

Cellulose settles some, and depth allows for it. Fiberglass settles very little.

Can you blow insulation into walls?

Yes, dense-pack through small holes that get patched.

How long does it take?

Usually a day.

Attic Insulation Removal Questions

Do I have to remove old insulation?

Only if it is wet, moldy, contaminated or badly damaged.

What about squirrels in the attic?

Contaminated insulation should come out after entry points are closed.

How long does removal take?

Usually a day, with re-insulating the same day or next.

Can you remove vermiculite?

Not before testing. Asbestos goes to a licensed abatement contractor.
