A Railroad Town by the Depot
Spray Foam Insulation in New Boston serves a town 22 miles west of Texarkana by U.S. 82 or I-30. New Boston grew from Missouri Pacific railroad construction in the summer of 1876, when lots went on sale on 100 acres the railroad had bought. A post office opened in 1877, and by 1884 the town had about 400 residents.
Depot town
The Red River Army Depot borders the city's southeastern edge, and Wikipedia notes that New Boston depends heavily on it and the former Lone Star Army Ammunition Plant. An International Paper mill and a state prison are also nearby employers. Housing built for those workers over the decades makes up much of the town.
Housing
The 2020 census counted 4,612 residents and 2,182 housing units, 12.1 percent vacant. Older homes usually have thin attic insulation and crawl spaces with damp, sagging batts. Newer homes need targeted sealing.
Storms
An EF3 tornado struck the western outskirts on November 4, 2022, causing minor damage. If your home had roof repairs after that storm, check whether the attic insulation was replaced or left wet.
Climate
New Boston has a humid subtropical climate with hot, humid summers and mild to cool winters. Humidity drives most of the crawl space and attic problems we see.
Code
Bowie County is Climate Zone 3A. Texas uses the 2015 IRC energy chapter: R-38 ceilings and R-19 floors in Zone 3.
County courthouse town
The Bowie County courthouse is in New Boston, and the town holds its Pioneer Days Festival and Rodeo each year at T&P Trailhead Park. Older homes near the center date from the town's railroad and depot eras. Those often have crawl spaces, thin attic insulation and ducts added after the fact.
Upgrades that pay back
For homes near the depot that are lived in year after year, attic sealing and crawl space work keep paying back in comfort and lower bills.
